Digha
Where the Bay of Bengal Meets Golden Sands
Where the Bay of Bengal Meets Golden Sands
Originally known as 'Beerkul', Digha was renamed after the Bengali word for 'long stretch', perfectly describing its expansive shoreline. The town first came to prominence in the 1920s when an English tourist, aware of its beauty, wrote to the Viceroy recommending it as the 'Brighton of the East'. Since then, Digha has grown into West Bengal's most popular beach resort town, welcoming lakhs of visitors each year.
Old Digha is the heart of the original settlement. Here, colourfully painted wooden fishing boats line the shore, and you can watch fishermen hauling in their nets at dawn β a tradition unchanged for generations. The narrow lanes are dotted with small seafood restaurants where you can eat the freshest catch cooked right before your eyes.
New Digha, developed in the 1990s, is the modern face of the town. A beautifully paved promenade runs parallel to the sea, flanked by hotels, restaurants, and shops. The beach here is wider and better maintained, with designated areas for swimming and beach sports. In the evening, the promenade transforms into a bustling market with shell jewellery, handicrafts, and street food stalls serving jhalmuri and chaat.
